I have some slop in my steering, enough to make me uncomfortable on the interstate. It has oversized tires but just barely, and no lift kit. I checked and the ball joints and tie rods look good. and I replaced the steering damper about a year ago. So my question is; how much play should there be where the steering column enters the gear box? I can twist mine at least 45 degrees before anything happens at the tires. Just for kicks I adjusted the box (loosened the nut on top and tightened the allen screw inside the nut). Turned it in about a full turn and it helped, but only some. If I go any further the wheels won't self-center after a turn. Time for a new gear box? Would grabbing one from a salvage yard be a waist of time?

Thanks man, I'll look into this. I did replace the steering shaft about a year ago but didn't know about the bearing.
I'm still wondering how much play I should have at the actual gear box before the pitman arm moves. Oh, and I also replaced the track bar and links.
