Am I expecting too much?
Ok everyone I just got back from my Vacation/Family visit in the truck. Trip was from Spartanburg SC to Outer Banks NC which is where Im from. It was a very nice trip good weather and good traffic. Trip each way was 422 miles from each gas station I used.
On the way up I filled up at the local QT with 93oct and my Hemifever 93 tune with MSD working. I got 18.95 MPG on that trip using cruise control no more than 71mph. This is hand calculated as I have an express.
On the trip back down I filled up with Sunoco 93oct with my Hemifever 93 tune with time with MSD off and ended up with 18.59 MPG. Same driving speeds and even less traffic as I ended up doing is little faster back.
Now I know its a truck and its not a hybrid but after reading everyone elses threads on here I feel like I should have been doing little better with my mods.
Trip was done with following below
2012 Quad Cab 5.7, stock 20" wheels, 3.92 gears
Hemifever 93 tune
Vararam Air Grabber
Billet Catch Can
Magnaflow Y pipe with Jones Full Boar Muffler
Air Lift 1000 with 10psi
Front tires 39psi Rears 34psi
Soft Roll up Tonneau Cover
Luggage included 1 set of cornhole boards, 2 suit cases, 1 duffle bag, 1 blankets, 2 6lb chihuahua's, Me and my wife.
My truck just turned 20,000 miles and before the trip I had my oil changed along with my spark plugs Champion Copper (because it was free)
Again like I said Im not upset about my mileage just slightly disappointed with it.
Let me know your thoughts even if its too tell me Im crazy. Thanks
Thats about right man. I just did a 3.5+ hour trip to Port Aransas from Austin with my wife, three kids and a grandbaby, our Jack Russel and dog crate, two full coolers, three beach chairs, a steel shovel and two three foot 2x6" pieces of wood. Average speeds were between 75-80mph the whole way on cruise with my 4x4 Hemi CC with 3.55's and the BDGT plus performance tune and averaged 18.57mpg hand calculated. I am impressed especially with speeds above 75mph. Now if I stayed at 72, that's my trucks sweet spot and averages me 21mpg all the time.
i would have expected a bit better with mds activated.
I feel you are about right for the area and speeds driven. If you want better mileage find your sweet spot, on my 12 Ram it is around 59 mph, on my 10 Ram it was 74 mph. My 08 Super Bee has its spot at around 74 mph. In most cases the extra mpg is not really worth slowing down to achieve if below 70's. I also find I get just a good if not better mpg with MDS shut off. The transmission and motor definitely feel better with it off.
