Which oil?
I'm not sure which oil weight I should be running this time of year. I'm in Salt Lake City and the temp's have been 100 or above. Anyone? :4-dontknow:

Thanks, Paul

I've run 20W50 in my vehicles for 30 years here on the MS Gulf Coast. Manufacturers require lighter stuff, but in this heat with a stock oil pump, I bump it up. If it had a hi-vol oil pump, then I'd stick with 10W30.

Thanks for responding, Gen1dak. It is a stock oil pump, and my original thoughts were 10w40. I run 10w30 in the winter, but I thought with our recent heatwave that 10w40 might be a better choice. Any particular reason why 30 might be better?

With a hi-volume pump you get all the pressure you need using 10W30. With a hi-vol pump, 20W50 nets around 85psi....too much. You actually lose HP. The rule of thumb is 10psi per thousand rpm's. So, on a hi-vol, 10W30 is about right (35-45ish psi), 10W40 in heavy heat conditions. In your situation, I'd use 20W50 in the heat, 10W40 in the dead of winter.

In my higher mileage vehicles, I tend to stick with 10w40(over 100,00 miles)...Use a good quality oil, I like royal purple, or valvoline.... My GMC has 340,000 miles on it, Dodge has 236,000 and my jeep has 240,000...all run RP and val max life 10w40 and get changed every 8-10,000 miles... And I live in Michigan where the weather changes every 10
