spark advance via superchip
Although I haven't posted here for a while, I've been reading and been quite busy with my truck.
During my recent engine rebuild, I had a COMPCam 20-744-9 installed. With all my mods I was expecting more than I noticed.
I recently discovered the spark advance mode on my superchip tuner, and have read I should probably set a few degrees to take advantage of my new cam.
I set it 2 degrees this morning, and I think (maybe it's in my head) that I felt quite a difference. How do I find the ideal degree change for my cam? My upgrades should be listed below.
My mods aren't auto showing. Here are the ones I think may affect the answer:
5.2L bored .030
Odessa performance heads
headers with full duel exhaust (2.5"), no cats
Not a lot of response, as I guess this is a pretty specific question. I emailed COMPCams, so I'll share my answer if I hear from them, for anyone in the future.
I changed it to 4 degrees this mornrig, and I'm not sure but it seemed a bit quicker.
Tomorrow I'm going to do a 0-60 test comparing the two. I should be able to do an accurate test using my dashcam to help time.
Just FYI I think the reason there's not much response is because most users on this forum have 3rd and 4th gens, so probably don't know much about 2nd gens.
I don't know much about your mods(I'm assuming since you have aftermarket heads they are very good). With a cam, performance heads, etc, you'd probably want to find another tuner that will allow custom tuning, and have it dyno tuned. You'd probably get way more out of it than with the superchips. Don't get me wrong, I love superchips and that's what I use but when you get in to heads/cam/headers/etc you really need to get it dialed in correctly.
Do I need another tuner if I take it to the dyno machine? Or is that something the dyno folks handle? Any thoughts on a tuner brand? Thanks again.
Honestly I'm not real informed on your engine/year truck just trying to provide any help I can. I'm sure you are in need of some custom tuning. The superchips for my truck doesn't give any option for "custom" adjustment of spark advance, so I'm not even sure what you're looking at. But adjusting it blindly without seeing the results(dyno, etc) probably will not yield the best results.
My superchip has an "advance tuning" area and it has the option of "spark advance" between zero and -6 degrees
