AC won't cool
Trouble with the ac, not very cold at idle, ok at speed.
New compressor and dryer last year. That is all I am sure of.
Just replaced the recirc door and it is working correctly.

Put on the gauges, suction 30#, Disc 450# and then cutting out on the switch I suppose. It would cycle like this at idle. At speed it would not cycle.

Thought it might be the orifice tube plugged up. Took that darn thing out, lot of work, and found a couple of metal chips in it. I don't know if it was changed out last year, so, chips are from??

Put on a new orifice tube assembly and pulled a vacuum. Shut down the pump and sat for an hour with no change in vacuum.

Charged the system. Compressor will run at almost 0 psi?? Added gas and brought the suction to 30#, disc at 375#, no cooling. I could see the inlet to the evap getting iced up at 10lbs, then it would warm up and the dryer would never cool off. Air certainly never cooled down.

Who has an idea?

If your A/C isn't running cold at idle, but it is at speed, that tells me one thing. That you don't have any air flow through the condenser when you are not moving. Check you're condenser fan and make sure it's coming on when your compressor engages.

Well, the clutch is mechanical, and it does look to be working at idle. The flow our of the condenser is much cooler than the inlet. I don't have a way to check the delta, but by hand you can touch the inlet, but the outlet is not to bad to touch.

There is no cooling going on now, at speed or idle.

You should have 2 different fans, the mechanical for the engine coolant and an electric for the a/c condenser.

The condenser, typo, very hot on the inlet and not so much on the outlet, seems to be working.

DOH! My bad. You've got a diesel. Reckon I shoulda looked at what type o truck you have. Hmmm, only left to check or change is the expansion valve. If that's not it, then I don't know, my friend. The only other thing I could think of would be the compressor itself is going bad. It'll work at higher rpm's, but not lower.

You said you found metal shavings in the orifice tube and you're not sure if it was replaced with the compressor last year. Well the orifice tube has no moving parts and does not wear out. so the leads me to think that it wouldn't have been replaced. There are shavings in your system; could they have destroyed the new compressor? failing compressor would see better function at speed than at idle..
