Which rear end gear ratio is best with 8 speed

I am trying to order a Laramie limited but am unsure of which gear works best with the 8 speed tranny. Standard is 3.21. I think I want 3.55 but isn't an option when spec'n it out. 3.92 is now an option but I wonder if that will be too much? Any suggestions. I want it to feel good on acceleration, but don't want to sacrifice too much mileage. Won't ever tow much more than a sled deck or two place sled trailer, or boat, etc. no heavy loads.

I think that the 3.55 rear gear is what you need
I think that they will be available, if they are not already

3.21 takes its time to get moving & get up to speed
3.92 gets moving a lot quicker, but loses a bit in MPG

my 2009 has the 3.55 ratio & even loaded with about 1,000 pounds extra, i got 18.6 MPG on flat desert highway today
I drove at about 80 MPH across Texas today & saw that
i was right at 2,000 RPM

Would agree 3.55's sound right for you. Something else to consider is whether you intend on putting bigger tires on it at some point. If you do, then you really do not want the 3.21's.

I ordered 3.92's, but I'll be not only towing and hauling more than it sounds like you will, but will also be going up in tire size. I'd have gone 4.10's if they were an option.

This question has been repeatedly asked. Use the search function.

Dodge is now supplying 8 speed autos with 3.21 due to the very deep first gear the tranny has yielding major torque multiplication. It is actually more 'potent' than the 3.92 rear with a 6 speed. The 3.92 is a poor choice for fuel economy unless you enjoy forking over your cash big time at every fill up.

I agree that 3.55 is what I need but 3.92 is only other option right now on the limited.

My dealer told me the 3.55 is standard on the limited. If it isn't they'll "have some splaining" to do.

This whole process of getting a limited has been a pain. Can finally build on online but its a 13. And can option 3.55. Can't order 13 anymore. Dealer specs out 14 and there has been no option. Says 3.21 is standard. Just yesterday 3.92 came available on his order but no word of 3.55

Not necessarily true, it all depends on your terrain. I had the 3.92 gears in my 09 QC Hemi and always got better MPGs than my friends with the 3.55's. The reason being, the motor did not lug down as much. 8spd, 5 spd, doesn't matter as the top OD gear is the same. Lots of threads on this. If you have any hills at all, the 3.92's are the way to go.

As an example at 55 mph, your RPMs are only about 1,300 in 8th gear with the 3.55's and 33" tires.

3.55 and 8 speed are not an option. My new truck, they reordered with the 3.55. Got an email a week later from Chrysler saying the only option with the 8 speed is 3.21 or 3.92.

I just ordered a 2014 Longhorn w/ 5.7 and 8 speed It came with a 3.21.... 3.55 was not an option
