275/55/20's on Express

What do you guy's think;
I just got a 13 Express with 3:92's and I'm thinking about maybe either putting some 275/55/20's on it or going with some V-Tec 17" wheels with 265/70/17's. Both give you about a 31.7" diameter but the 17's may have the weight advantage. By the way the 20's are the non chrome clad 20X8's. A Vararam is already on order.

I am thinking the same thing but with 285/50/20 that measure 31.2. I figure this will give me about a 6% gear change equivalent. I have 3.55 gears now. ugh! I believe the stock rims are 20x9, at least that is what it says when you build a truck on the Ram corp site. I also looked into the 17" rim/tire combo but kinda like the low profile street look better, if I went with the 17s I would want an AT tires which would negate any weight savings.

I like the look of the 20's also, not ready to lower it right now and the weight of the 265/70/17's I have are about the same as or more than the stock 20" tires. I think the chrome clad 20's are 9" wide while the non-chrome clad' are 8", I could be wrong. The 17" V-Tecs are pretty light though.

You are correct sir! Express rims are x8 and the class are x9.

I have 275/55/20 if you switch away from the factory rims to lighter ones and with the 6% gear ratio advantage is day and night its the best upgrade I have done to my truck so far.

Thats good to know. Im about ready to pull the trigger on 4.10 gears with LSD but I read some guys dont notice that much of a change going from 3.55 to 4.10s. I would think it would be a huge change. What lighter 20" rims did you get?

roo 08-04-2013 03:33 PM

Yea, I'm would like to know also. Bran, did you happen to weigh both types of 20" wheel?

There's a lot of good info in this thread:

I run 20's on the street , 17's for the track on DR's (all 4) and its a half second quicker.

I've heard over and over again for the best acceleration go with 4.56's. I have the anti-spin diff with 3.55's and was thinking about 4.10's but the more I research I think I'm going to just go with 4.56's.

As always BlackRamHemi.......you are a great educator and inspiration for 4x4's with 3.55's.
