275/65/20 question

It came time to replace the 275/60/20 stock tires on my 08. I went with 275/65/20 toyo open county at2's (very happy with the decision) my question is on the stock tires I wasn't able to stick my finger between the tire and the upper control arm and with the new tires I can fit my finger and wiggle it. Both tires are 275 so I'm not sure why the smaller stock tires had less clearance than some bigger meatier 34's. My only thinking is that the old 4ply tires allowed more side wall flex and the new 10 ply are stiffer so the sidewall doesn't flex? I like the new tires but almost regret not going with a 285 now..........

You are correct in assuming that the 4 plys had more flex and "sagged" to the sides. Also, if you had the tires mounted even if you didn't request an alignment the shop may have aligned it a little anyway (due to clearance issues they may have had).
