Question regarding purchase date on a build

I'm leaning more and more towards building a 2014, but I do have a concern around purchase date. I just sold my car private party last week, and in Arkansas folks have 45 days from the date of the sale to use the sale price as a trade difference for sales tax on a new vehicle. It's probably pretty safe to say a build wouldn't be delivered in that timeframe, so I'm curious to know if the sale date on builds can be set at any time between the order date and delivery date, or does it have to be on delivery.

I am not sure if it depends on date but in MI, date of sale is the date you take possession. It may behoove you to pick from a lot vehicle. The dealers can do searches of what's been shipped and coming into the area.

I wish the sites were updated for the 2014 but that probably won't happen until September at the earliest. That would make your search a lot easier.

The State DMV here is incredibly cooperative when you call them...Ive never had an issue .. try it.... btw ..the date IS when you take possession....and theres a minimum price of $2500 if memory serves..sell your heap below that and there is no sales tax on it...but why not get the official word?

As far as the DMV is concerned I would think the sale date would be the date you title the vehicle and pay the dealer. I doubt you could pay for a truck and get a title for something that is not even built yet, but it might work once you have the VIN. Of course you would be taking a huge risk of something going wrong from manufacturing and shipping.

I would buy off the lot. You will save a lot more if you can get a 2013 with the rebates.

Good tip. I'll give them a call. Oh, and they recently changed the amount. It used to be 6% on any purchase (or trade difference) over $2,400, but now it's 6.5% on any purchase or trade difference over $4,000.

I thought this would be the case, but not really for me because I want a Laramie Limited. The rebates I qualify for on the 2013 models are only marginally better than the estimated rebates on a 2014.

I did read that a while back, I just didn't know what they considered to be the purchase date on a build-to-order. I figured it was on delivery date, but I was wondering if it could be bumped up, as tev9999 suggested, to possibly the date that the VIN is assigned. My dealership said they would look into this, just haven't heard back from them on it yet.

that might be interesting, but the date is the date you take possession....if they manage to swizzle it around to something else....well....
