opinions on 17" drag tire setup for 3.92's

I posted this on DT and wanted to hear from you guys as well...

I want your opinions on drag tire setups. I've swapped my gearing back to 3.92's for now (had 4.56's) and so I think I can probably go to a slightly smaller tire than what I'm using now (28" Hoosier slicks or M&H 325/45-17 's) ...anyone with shorter setups please tell me your experience with them. My 'racing' season starts next month and am thinking of replacing the worn M & H's. So let me know what you think... I'll be running on motor on 9/8 (mopar muscle magic at Sac) and putting the bottle back on for the truck drags in oct (10/20).. I'm terrible at math and trying to figure what rpm's I'll be at when i hit the traps..

That sounds close Grant's (catsltd) setup...

good to hear thanks...I think I'll look for a 27" dr then..the mt's are a good option...

Hit Grant up by PM to see where he's at for RPM's
I cant recall what he was at last time we lined up.

compressor man has run with 26" ET's on his 3G with 3.92's, I think they were a little too short

I ran Friday night and only picked up 15/100 switching from a 275/55/20 on factory wheels to the dr's, would have been less but I hit the rev limiter on the first pass trying to see how long I could hold 2nd gear compared to the 275/60/20. They do seem to make more difference if I totally prep the truck, but at full weight I'm in 3rd way too long. I want to try a 28" tire, I think It will be better, maybe even an ultra light 30" to keep me in the power gears longer, 3rd is such a killer, even shifting out of 2nd at 6500. Best I could get was a 14.4 at 1500'DA at full weight minus spare and gate.

27" tall tire with a 10% loss due to converter slip should give you about 120 mph @ 6500 rpm in 3rd (1:1) with 3.92 gears. A 15% loss would be about 114 @ 6500.

What's your max rpm Fred? You're back to the stock TC right?

USAF Long 08-23-2013 07:33 AM

with his 113.xx mph trap speed he is close to the 114 mph on a 27" tire at 15% loss. I'd stick with a 28" and re-gear accordingly. Wouldn't automatic converter slip range from 15%-25%?

roo 08-23-2013 09:06 AM

I think 25% would be kinda high.

BlackRamHemi 08-23-2013 12:02 PM

sounds too high to me too, even for aftermarket

Fred, what happened to your 4.56's ? Did you lose it to carnage?
and who's torque converter are you running now?

I maxxed my rpm limiter to 7k rpms (last I remembered). I'm back to a stock verter because i need it looser for spraying. I lost a little when running on motor but I've gotten better times consistently on a stockverter. I fried my 4.56's because I'm terrible at setting gears up, lol...with 3.92's and lower you don't have to be perfect but when you get up to 56's you have to set these up more carefully...
