My 4.7 liter is burning oil out the tailpipe need help

I have a 02 dodge ram with about 140k. runs good but its burning oil out the tailpipe. I checked to see and hope it the plenum gasket thing but I dont think they have one i'm left puzzled. the pcv hose are cracked could that be it could it be a cracked intake im lost

Could be a number of things. Easiest things to check are the PCV valve and those areas but I wouldn't guess something that small would do it. I'd say the oil ring could be shot on one or more pistons.... That would be the most likely thing IMO.

the hose on the pcv valve are torn but could a pcv valve cause all of that does it sounds like a rebuild

If they're torn it definitely shouldn't be sucking oil through the PCV....

I'm thinking it's something within the engine so yes it would be a rebuild to find out what it is and fix it.

Why do you say its burning oil out of the tailpipe? Is it oily? If so probably the oil rings. How does it run? And how much oil does it use? I would also do a compression check before I started talking rebuild.

well depends on how it burns oil....upon starting, accelerating from stop, while cruising....It can leak oil different ways not just the oil rings, could be bad valve seals..etc

But check the intake and intake manifold or oil film....thats a good indication that pcv is bad....

Brandon & tj are correct. It depends on when/how it's losing it, and it could be a plethora of things. Wish it was a simple answer and/or simple fix, but it's not.
