03 5.7 issues.. advice?
First off my names Kyle, new here. I have a 03 2500 5.7 150k miles... gm truck guy who bought a dodge! haha. Anyways my issues with my truck is a long story. I bought it for what I thought was a good deal, turns out I bought a lemon. It smokes, ticks a little and burns oil pretty good, runs like a turd, havnt lost any coolant that I can tell. From all my research me and a couple mechanic friends have narrowed it down to the valve springs and seals. I was gonna send it to an auction because ive been down this road before and last time it turned into a money pit. But while waiting to send her off a limb fell on the roof and tore up the truck pretty bad. Now theres no way I can get my money back out of it so im considering fixing it all and keeping it. From all my research on the web it seems the 03's suck! If I fix the valve springs....and that is actually the problem will it be worth the trouble? ALSO while im in there what else could/should I do? A mild cam? Its a beautiful truck and id love to have it running good just having cold feet. Sorry for the long post! Thanks for any advice

I have a 03 and have loved and still love it. Even if the tranny gave out at only 331000 miles ha ha. I did have a vavle spring break on it when it was still under warranty. I spun a bearing on the crank at 250000 miles or so the that motor had a defective head but the company I bought it from warrantied it. 12000 miles later the tranny lost 3rd gear and needs a rebuild and my wife won't let me fix it and MADE me buy a newer truck. Other than that I have almost no issues with it. The ac still blows ice cold and everything but the tranny works as it should. Oh and I rebuilt the rear axle at around 225000 mile due to a quick lube place putting the wrong fluid in it. I hope this helps.

It's a good looking truck to be honest.

Overall though the truck isn't going to be the enemy here it will be the previous owners and how well they maintained it. Age is an obvious factor here as well.

Like anything else once it gets worn out you need to repair or replace it. So if you have a few things in the engine that need work at ten years with an unknown maintenance history... well I say you get what you pay for.

I will say I didn't think the 03-05 Hemi Ram's had to many problems. Once they got the cracking dash fixed the rest fell into place thanks to that Mercedes transmission.

Good luck to you! I think if you can get that truck running right again you will enjoy it.

Once any troublesome valvesprings, cracked dash and/or warped rotors are replaced, the only real obstacle is tuning. For a fairly stock truck though you'd be in good shape. The only issue I've had is transmissions...once you start upping the power they don't last as long. But it's fun while they last (I'm a mechanic so I do my own work anyway)!
