For 2014 why no 3.55 axle ratio on most Hemi Ram's?
 
Any Chrysler/Ram peeps on here who can explain why they dropped the option of the 3.55 axle ratio with most Ram 1500 models and the Hemi engine for 2014?
Seems an unnecessary option removal and to many (including me) it's the best all around axle ratio with the new 8 speed auto.

you should check with the 5 star dealership in your area
some sites don't have a complete factory ordering list

in fact, don't go to the dealership showroom, ask for the Fleet/Internet office
get the best no hassle price, all the incentives, etc

I'll take a shot, but this this is just a guess.
The 8HP70 has a very low first gear, around 4.7:1. They probably figure with this kind of torque, they can get away with the 3.21, and keep the mpg higher.
They still offer the 3.92 for the guys that want/need the higher towing capacity.

Again - based on nothing solid. If someone has better info, great!

I would venture what you are suggesting might be part of the reason.

With the 8 speed auto and the 3.21 gears, the Ram truck actually accelerates faster than the 6 speed auto with the 3.55 gears.

So for Chrysler, the "base" or "tallest" gears (3.21's) now offer better acceleration and better gas mileage than the outgoing 6 speed with 3.55's
But the doesn't explain the reasoning to eliminate a perfectly good option.

See for me, the old 6 speed auto and 3.55 gears truck accelerated decently, but not great. The 8 speed auto with 3.21 gears is a fraction better, but not enough.
The 8 speed auto with the 3.92 accelerates great, but also gets the worst gas mileage.

So the best option is right down the middle, the 8 speed auto with the 3.55 gears. You get noticeably better acceleration than the 6 speed auto with 3.55 gears (actually, the 8 speed auto with 3.55 gears probably accelerates faster than the 6 speed auto with 3.92 gears), plus you get better gas mileage with the 8 speed 3.55's than you do with either the 6 speed auto with 3.55's or 3.92's or the 8 speed auto with 3.92's.

So that's the reason I got my 2013 Laramie with the 3.55's, it's the best combo of all gear options.
And since I won't be towing anything even moderately heavy (over 5000 lbs), nor do I live at higher altitudes or the need to pull up steep mountain grades, the 3.92's are not really needed for me.

I guess if I had to choose, which it looks like I'm going to have to when Chrysler swaps out my 2013 for a 2014, I'll go with the 3.92's.

My guess it was a manufacturing cost cutting option for Chrysler.
Not having to offer 3 axle ratios on many of the trucks is probably saving them money, since the $50 option price for the 3.55's or 3.92's, clearly isn't a money making price. But I'd of just preferred them to raise the option price of the 3.55's and/or 3.92's to like $150 then, and keep the 3 axle ratio options available.

the 3.55 is still available in some trucks so that doesn't make sense either driver. not sure what the reason is but I have been asking around with no luck

I agree with you all. I made a guess, but didn't say it made sense to me. I'd like to talk to the guys who make some of the option decisions. Probably bean counters or something....

i ordered 3.92s on my 14 spot but was offered 3.21, 3.55, and 3.92 from my dealer here in NY.

Everyone says the 3.55 with the 8 speed gets better gas mileage than the 3.92 with the 8 speed, but does anyone have hard numbers? what is the real world difference in MPG?

It would really be nearly impossible to have an apples to apples comparison between the two.
Simply because no 2 people drive the same route and the same way.
Even you and I, and everyone else, your mileage varies from tank to tank just because you yourself drive differently every gas tank, sometimes may hit more stop lights, other times driving harder or passing more people.

But with a 3.92 axle ratio, you will be turning more rpms when cruising at any given speed. So if you routinely drive 70 mph on a freeway drive to work, in the 3.92's you're engine will be spinning about 200 rpms more. That uses more gas.

In city driving the difference may be smaller, it all depends on your right foot and how hard you push the go pedal.

Realistically, on average the difference may be .5-.75 miles per gallon.
And since you can have that much variance between two tanks of gas with any car, it would be hard to show it was the axle ratio causing you to get worse gas mileage. But facts are facts, if you are turning higher rpms at a given speed you'll be drinking a bit more gas.

I really wanted the 3.55s as well (I've had the 3.92s in my last 2 trucks)... Was very disappointed that I could only choose 3.21 or 3.92. I don't care what anyone says about the 3.21s - they are a JOKE. Who in their right mind would want a 1/2 ton truck with a 400 hp engine that is only rated to pull 6000 lbs??
I wanted the 3.55s for a little better gas mileage on the interstate... but maybe things are different with the 3.92s. I'm thinking that with the slower rears, the truck may stay in 4 cylinder mode longer... Yes, it's turning a few more rpm, but if it stays in 4 mode longer, it may save gas in the long run??

I also wanted the 3.55 axle ratio and it makes absolutely no sense why the axle is offered in the lower model Ram's with the Hemi but not in the Laramie. It looks like it will be offered with the diesel later this year as well, when it becomes available. I have been dealing with this since Feb, 2013 when I ordered a 2013 Ram 1500 CC Laramie 4X4 with the 8 speed and 3.55 axle. During the order, it actually showed the 3.55 axle was standard and the 3.21 axle was nowhere to be seen on the order form. I learned after the truck was built and waiting to be shipped that it was actually built with a 3.21 axle. (Lots of people in that boat!) Management from Chrysler got involved and after it was determined the axles couldn't be swapped at the factory, they cloned my order and built me a new truck with the 3.55 axle in 3 days. That portion of my dealing with Chrysler was awesome and they were very responsive. Unfortunately, the truck arrived damaged and both passenger side doors had to be re-painted. The repair was unsatisfactory, so I didn't take delivery on the second order. Now, I have a 2014 Ram 1500 cc 4x4 Laramie on order (my last try) and I'm back where I started-no 3.55 axle. I too ended up ordering the 3.92 axle as the tow capacity with the 3.21 axle is too low. The 3.92's will tow about 4,000 pounds more than the 3.21. I am a little puzzled why the Ram 1500 with the Hemi/6 speed transmission and 3.55 gears tows 2,000 pounds (8450 lbs) more than a Hemi/8 speed with 3.21 gears (6400 lbs)?
