Ordering HID lights since the Ram headlights are worthless

Oh, did I mention the Ram projector headlights produce a warm, dim yellow light that is almost worthless? There are also no cornering lamps at all. With such wonderful lighting technology available, I find it very disappointing that Ram did not even offer an optional cost HID Xenon or LED headlamp system. The headlights on the RAM are straight out of the last century antiquated, obsolete technology. In the Walmart parking lot, I had difficulty knowing if my headlight were on since the projector headlight was so dim. Yes, I tell it like it is.

The high beam sensor system however, is quite good. I am referring to the 'auto mode' switching intelligence and not the light output. If you enter a real dark roadway, the high beams are automatically turned on. Any oncoming vehicle will quickly extinguish the brights.

My dad did the same with his '10 3500. He hasn't had any problems, altho I was worried about warranty issues. He loves them, and you can't deny the huge improvement.

It's on my list to do with my 2014. But I need to do a lot more research on it first.

I suggest if you are wanting imroved light go all the way.

Have your headlights retrofitted.

Here are the results...

You actually pull your headlights off and send them in.

I got it done through the retroshop(dot)us.

It will cost you but this has been the best investment regarding light that I have seen so far.

He drops in an FX-R HID projector that is made to handle the HID bulbs. I am running 55W 5K retrosolutions HIDS.

As you would expect, my first question is about how long is the turn around? Driving without lights is not too cool.

When you receive the modified headlights back from the company, does everything plug directly in? Are their any modification or jumper cables that must be added? In other words, is it 'plug 'n play?'

I will contact the company on Monday. Thanks very much!

Since you have the Laramie trim, you already have projector headlamps so you don't need to send them in. You only need to get the HID kit and harness from retro solutions.

I went with the 55 watt 4300Ks in my Laramie.

This is where the retroshop differs. You just put HID's into your halogen-projector. While the output is better...it isn't the best.

Here is the comparison.

Stock Projector with 55W 5K HID's:

Retrofitted headlights, same HIDS:

If you want an easy fix.. dropping in HID's is fine. If you want performance the retrofit is the only way to go. Turning on my fog lights is just overkill.

Sky-- The retrofit will still allow you to keep your headlights plug and play. HID's however are plug and play to an extent. If you choose to get a retrofit done and buy HID's from the retroshop JJ will get the headlight housing all set up.

You will have to wire/setup the relay harness as well as mount the ballasts for the HID's. The overall system is basically plug and play with a little bit of creativeness required to make it look factory.

Wow, didn't realize there was a difference in projectors, thanks for the comparison photos. So now I ask, as did someone else, how long does it take to get the headlamps reworked with the new projectors?

country-boy 09-07-2013 10:41 AM

I'm very surprised about the difference too. I'd like more solid information on what retroshop did specifically. Still looks like the same 70mm housing. The two pictures you showed (both with HID but different housings) just doesn't make sense. You certainly have my attention. I trust you - but still want the full story.

Monster - Did you do this in 2014? Did you replace with the 9012/HIR2 lamps only (the ones that handle BOTH low/high beams, or did you replace the additional highbeams with 9005/HB3 too?
