'86 w250

I just purchased an '86 dodge w 250 4x4. It's got a stock 5.2l w 2 barrel carb.
I was wanting t build the engine to about 400hp for mudbogging.
I'm currently in paramedic school & still trying to stay full time @ work.
I would like to build motor for less that $1500. If anyone has any suggestions feel free to email me @ jvandevender9567@gmail.com

Start with a 360 if you want a small block. You'll be ahead of the curve starting out with the bigger bore and longer stroke (no replacement for displacement). It will also be easier to build a good torque engine (what you'll need) starting with a 360 than a 318. If you don't have to worry about emissions or mileage, throw a big block in there.

Will the 5.2 & 5.9 magnum from newer rides bolt up to the 86's tyranny?

Yes, but you should avoid automatics from 1996 and up as they are electronically actuated in all phases. 1995 and older are hydraulically controlled and will work just like your 3-speed. You just need a simple toggle switch to supply power to the overdrive section.

Go with an A518.
