Ok so if you want the short story here it is. went to bombay beach found mud got stuck

long story: Ok so had the day off and decided to go see Salton Sea with the wife... Well she heard about an abandoned town like people just got up and left vehicles tv's etc... well we see the town and its kinda cool in a super Erie way(like hills have eyes.) then i notice a break in the berm that leads to where houses used to be before it flooded last year and figure lets check it out. then we see an old broken down salt encrusted crane thing and drive a little on the beach to get their. take a few pics and then i see open season for my 4x4 with a 6 in lift all was fun and games until i saw a little bit of watery tracks figure i can make it through...WRONG

mind you this is a ghost town the entire time i drove through it except for a family with a wagon rummaging through the houses. then after about 2hrs of attempting to get out this lady appears from no where and say your not gonna get out that way you need a tractor...thanks but where did you come from..oh i heard your truck and figured someone was stuck again... dont leave your truck its nice id hate for something to happen to it...then walks away

well figure its time to call a tow company. the guy brings out a wrongler with a wench long story short snaps the winchand im deeper than before and now i have to do an insurance claim to get the damages taken care of from the cable. he refers me to call a guy with a tractor...why didnt you mention that in the first place...so i call dickersons towing he says he has a snow cat...i dont know what a snow cat is but figure he sounds confident it will get me out so i say ok ill accept you charging me 400 to get out (200 an hr) its getting dark and this place is creeping me out. he says this is my number call it if you need anything ill be their as soon as possible. i say no hurry he says oh yeah your not from around here..you want to be gone before night...ok then

almost as soon as he gets there (DUSK) people start popping out of no where looking over the berm staring at me. i get out of the truck to see if hes close and their he is. as soon as he pulled the snow cat off the tow truck people started dis appearing one by one. then i see a guy come over the berm with a drill speaking arabic walking twards my truck. Luckily i remembered a littler pastu and hoped it was the same dialect. i told him to stop(woodarega) and asked him how he was (sungai eh) he said im fine (hueyum) and walked back over the berm and disappeared. (Never thought the language would help over here)

Snow cat tow truck guy gets over to me and says you picked the wrong place to go wheelin...i said i guess so and told him about the guy. he said yeah he was gonna drill hole in your tank to get your fuel then take what ever else he wanted if you werent around. snow cat pulled me out told me if i want to see the good places to go to come out on a tues and call him we can go wheeling togeather. drove like hell 3 hrs home and now im safe...i think...

I dont know what i would have done. before the other tow co. got me deeper i dug out the rear dif and all 4 tires let the psi down to 25 moved about 2 in and sunk to the diff again...it was like a quick sand so if snow cat tow truck wasnt their id be modifing a turret in my truck and making a crew cab with a 50 cal made of sticks macgyver style

That mud looks nasty, like it was designed to eat anything with tires that came through it. Glad you're out safe. Now you've got a cool story about getting stuck!

That is just a crazy story. Ya maybe for future reference.. When visiting erie abandoned towns.. Don't test out your 4x4..

Glad you managed to get it all out and that your truck wasn't stripped down to the raw frame. Hate seeing that.

yeah apparently I'm not the first. When I called dickersons tow (snow cat) I described the area and he said oh your at the end of 5th street in Bombay beach just over the dirt divider wall. I said yes sir he said ok 15 min to load I'll be their shortly. I said don't you need a credit card number (that's what the lady said who answered the phone) he said no if your where I think you are you ain't goin no where...he was right

Ya.. Only time to go alone is when you know you got someone who can pull you out in a somewhat close distance and knows what they are doing.

LOL funny story

i lived in Niland just south of there, i used to go to Bombay Beach almost every weekend, best bar around for miles was there,' Luck of the Irish'
one of the favorite bars for the Navy Seal Team back in the 1970s

This is Bombay Beach today

the story of the Sultan Sea is almost erie in itself
at one time it was deep under water, then it dried up & there was so much salt in the area, that they ran railroad tracks into the deepest part & mined the salt.
One day the natural berm surrounding that area was accidentally breached while they were working on the Colorado River & it filled back in, the tracks & rail cars & i believe one engine was buried under water.
The whole area has MUD POTS, boiling mud ponds all around there
at a little town close by, they have Hot Mineral Spas there, people pay to stay there & bath in the heated mud
In a desperate attempt to save the fishing in the Salton Sea, they decided to raise the level of the Sea several feet with fresher water to dilute the salt level, it worked for years, but it didn't last as long as they had hoped
Fully half of the towns & cities around the Salton Sea are either boarded up or abandoned
the Salton Sea is or was 58 miles long & a few miles wide
