1999 1500 ram
 
having starting issues. replaced engine now will not start. have checked timing multiple times. thought maybe was 180 out so i tried and checked that as well. there is great spark at the coil. applied new cap n rotor. still no start. checked all wires both plug wires and electrical connections. if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Wild shot, but is it possible the PCM needs to be flashed for the new motor? Might be something for the dealer. Fuel pressure? Injectors spraying? Pull a plug. Why did you replace the old motor, could the same problem exist, preventing new one from starting. Used to be a lot easier back in the good old days. 318 won't start, check gas, check spark, bingo.

Is it trying to fire at all? If you have spark, it should try to if you're getting any fuel at all. Check your fuel pressure. How long was the engine out? Gas separates and goes bad really quick these days. Also maybe you've got air in the fuel line. If those check out, than maybe a crank sensor?

Sounds like your distributor synch may be off. It's a much more precise alignment required in the Magnum. Not like the old days when you could drop the distributor in and it'd be essentially correct, requiring just a little adjustment to get it right, all the while starting anyway. You can test with a DRB tool and it'll give you a + or - to advance or retard the distributor housing (like adjusting the base timing in older models, just give it a twist), or you can just set up a pattern. Loosen the distributor hold-down slightly, and, in very small increments, turn the distributor, then attempt to start. Try a couple times, then go back to your baseline, and go in the opposite direction a couple times. It's a trial and error method, but if you don't have access to a DRB tool, you can still find the sweet spot. Once it starts, don't forget to re-tighten the hold-down bolt.
