How do you get the frill inserts out?

I've searched and I cant find anything. How do you pull out the inserts in the grill? It looks like they're almost melted into the other plastic. I'd like to paint those green but I'm only going to do so when they're out of the grill. I know you can buy different inserts, so they have to come out somehowww.

2001, Second Gen. Sport if that changes anything.

and I, uh.. meant "grill inserts"...

haha i'll rephrase to question

"How do i get the grill inserts out WITHOUT HARMING THEM enough to put them back in?"

This video may help a bit, they took out the whole grill
the guy used WD-40 to break the screws loose
He should have used PB BLASTER instead, squirt it on & walk away for 5 or 10 minutes

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBbmvaIG2Rw

almost all of the videos that i watched, they cut the center part out a certain way
or they use clip on inserts

there must be a better way, like drilling out plastic rivets, or something

I do believe they are plastic welded together. It will require grinding away some of the plastic and then reattach with adhesive of some sort.

so basically, I have to break them off, then glue back on? haha

GTyankee 09-21-2013 09:51 PM

take off the grille & lay it on some cardboard
then use Painters tape or Frog tape to cover what you don't want painted
scratch up the rest or use some kind of binding agent & start painting

Less dynamite. HaHa

On mine, it's held to the frame with a friction type clip. You know, the PITA type that you have to bend up to get off, but once you get them off you usually can't use them again because they're so bent up.

Like MorePwr said, I'm pretty sure they're like plastic welded on. I accidentally popped and broke a few off when i was tinkering with them.
