Freon Evacuation.

I know it is illegal to just let it out. But is there anyway I can do it myself?
I have to replace my a/c compressor because the clutch is shot and causes a loud satanic squeal. I'm doing it myself. As for the freon, I might have to take it in to have it drained.

You may be able to rent a recovery bottle at your local parts store, then reuse what you recover. But, once you put the new compressor on, you're gonna have to connect a vacuum pump and bring your lines down to a vacuum. Do you have that equipment?

I'll check that out. And what do you mean by bring the lines down to a vacuum exactly?

Once you hook all the lines back up to the dryer, accumulator, compressor and condenser, you must put a vacuum pump on the system and put negative pressure in the system and let it set for a half hour or so. This does 2 things, 1) ensures that you don't have any leaks and B) will boil off any residual condensation you have in the lines.

Alright. Is it possible to rent that equipment? Or maybe I can just install the compressor and then take it down to have that done?

RogerRamJet 10-19-2013 12:47 PM

You probably can rent it, or install the compressor yourself and then take it to a shop that can do it.

I've decided what I might do. I will have my local shop evacuate everything and then I will install the compressor myself, and then I will take it back to have the vacuum, oil, and recharge done.

Sounds like a plan. Let us know how it turns out.
