Help with 1500 cab high truck cap?

If anyone has installed a fiberglass cab high truck cap could you share some photos? I am considering the ARE Z cap to facilitate Labrador transportation! I am also wondering if the plastic bed side rail protectors need to be removed. The company in this area of Ohio that installs them said no the cap sits on the plastic side rails but in some photos I have seen on you tube it appears the plastic side rail covers were removed. This is an expensive add on so I want to make sure it will look ok and get some details from those that have added a cap.

I had a Leer topper installed on my truck a month ago and the plastic caps were not removed. The installer said that they benefit the truck and topper in two ways. First it won’t wear the paint down on the bed rails and second it keeps the topper for sliding. Hope this helps.

New Leer 100XQ

I just had a Leer 100XQ installed on my 2014 RAM. They left the plastic bed rail caps on, which makes sense to me because I like the possibility of removing the cap in the future. Note that they did replace the tailgate cap with one that seals better.

Cap is fairly well built, but I the install work was not up to quality I would have liked. Pics below show truck with cap and a detail of the back corner where you can see the plastic bed rail still in place. Note the overspray on the liner from the factory.

Coincidentally, I am in Dayton, Ohio. I installed the cap for English Springer Spaniel transport to far off hunting locations.

I have a Leer 100XR installed and they left the plastic rails on.

The only issue I had, was the tailgate does not have a rubber seal .... so water and dust was coming in (being sucked in when driving). I then bought a third party rubber seal for the tailgate ... installed it ... and now everything is fine.

some pics attached. This is an ARE basic model. Attached to the truck on top of the plastic. I added a pic of the back too, to forwarn you about that. Ram's big ass butt makes it impossible to build a topper with a smooth line back there. In mine, there's a plastic attachment attached to the back topper window that covers the top of the tailgate and rides over the edge. Kinda awkward, but the only way to go. The truck is reasonably clean but that ledge attracts grime like crazy too. I don't think Ram cares much about those of us that need a topper on the trucks though....

I guess there's no way to upload two pics to the same post--here's the 2nd one...

here is my ARE Toolmaster truck cap. the plastic rail covers are on. I HIGHLY recommend getting the tailgate seal kit, I've got to put one on mine because ever time I drive a dirt road the bed gets full of dust.
