DEF Usage
I just took delivery of a 2013 Ram 2500 Crew Cab 4x4 with the 6.7 Cummins. It had 900 miles on it from the dealer. The DEF gauge was almost full. I drove the truck 600 miles towing a 5000 lb trailer and about 100 miles around town and the DEF gauge is now close to empty. I was told the DEF tank should last about 10,000 miles from the dealer. How many miles should it last and how big is the DEF tank? Not much info in the owner's manual.

I just brought my '13 2500 Laramie 4X4 with the CTD home on Tuesday! I am still learning but from what I have read, under normal city driving and flat interstate travel, the DEF should last quite a while. But, when you start putting a load on the engine, more exhaust gases go through and therefore more of the DEF is used. I am not sure as this is my first diesel but I would have thought it would have last longer than what yours has.

Not much help I know but hopefully someone with more knowledge and experience with this will chime in.

A “typical” DEF capacity on a full-size light truck should provide a driving range of somewhere in the neighborhood of 5,000 to 7,000 miles or so (depending on the size of the DEF tank and the driving habits of the Driver) Most light trucks use DEF at a reported rate of about 1% to 1.25% of the vehicle’s diesel fuel usage. The tank is supposed to hold 9 gallons

Cummins says roughly 1 gallon of DEF for every 50 gallons of fuel used. Tank capacity in the manual is wrong. It lists the tank size for c&c models (4500+). 5.5 gallons is what 2500/3500 tank size should be from what is being reported elsewhere. Some are also reporting that their DEF guage is not very accurate.

The gauge is completely inaccurate. It shows full pretty much if it's got 2.5 gallons in it. Mine was below 1/4 yesterday and I put a 2.5 gallon adder in and it pegged the meter. It was nowhere close to full when you took delivery, unfortunately.
