2011 Diesel vs 2014 Gas

What would you rather have a 2011 2500 Laramie Mega Cab diesel 36000 miles or 2014 3500 Laramie, Single wheel, 6.4 Hemi. 0 miles?

The 2014 is only $3000.00 more before negotiation.

Drive em both. I'd probably go with the 6.4 hemi. If I was towing heavy trailers every day, maybe the Cummins, but I'm not.

Kcbigbadram 01-20-2014 09:09 PM

What will you be using the truck for? Me personally I would be very tempted to choose the 6.4 if I was buying right now

I'd go with the gasser.

your daily use is a big factor thats left out ..

also warranty plays a big factor here. diesels are spendy to own and fix. the 2014 will be covered by warranty..

Given the fuel economy of current diesels (because of epa emissions bs) the cost savings on the 6.4, maintenance savings, and similar fuel economy numbers with cheaper fuel is I think going to propel sales of the 6.4 gas 3/4 ton rigs to numbers that haven't been seen in years in the gas 3/4 ton segment. Don't get me wrong if money were no object or I was towing most days up near the maximum limit of the vehicle diesel would be the clear choice. If its being used as a DD and you need it tow greater than a 1500 but not all the time I think the clear winner would be the 6.4.

Warranty is pretty neat too. I bet you will get a marginally better loan rate on the brand new truck VS the 11. The diesel may have slightly better resale based on the investment but if you don't plan on getting rid of it in the next 3 or 4 years I would say gas all the way. Also check on the insurance and license plate differences which shouldn't be that far apart.

i would pass on that year diesel and go with the 6.4.

It depends on your use for the truck. The 3500 would allow you to carry more weight in the bed. The Cummins would make a better tow vehicle.

Thanks for all the comments guys. This truck would double duty has my daily driver and my back up work truck. It could be used for towing excavation equipment or hauling my four wheeler in the bed. I have had both diesel and gas trucks but it seems they very greatly on the years they came out. All have been 2500 except a 2004 ram 1500. My last 2500 got turned into a full time work truck and I recently end up with a 2009 1500 to replace it. The ride is nice, and so it parking it. But it gets shitty mpg and cant carry a load. So I am looking to replace it. Thanks again

i have a diesel unless you are putting 40,000+ miles a year on it, or towing very heavy all the time, i would go with the 6.4 that gets the same if not better gas mileage. way more maintenance in the diesel and fuel costs $.85 more a gallon here
