5.2 vs. 5.9 for towing
 
I drive a '99 Ram 2wd with the 5.2 and pull a 24ft.TT , loaded about 5500lbs. I use an equalizer hitch and sway control and find it a comfortable, controllable tow. I tow with OD off, and definitely avoid any steep grades possible as my set up simply is for flatlands. I am considering a truck that has the 5.9 as well as 4wd. We have run into pretty crappy driving going back north from Texas to Manitoba in March and extra power to deal with those headwinds as well as 4wd would be nice. My 5.2 has been rock solid, and wondering about the rep of the 5.9, and if it is a decent jump in power. Cummins would be sweet but not viable financially at the moment. Thanks for any input.

If you don't have one, why not do a transmission cooler. I'd stick with the 5.2. If it's been working, stick with it. I see early 03-04 hemi trucks pretty cheap, now. 345 hp with 3:92 will tow pretty well. My hemi tows better than my friend's early 24V Cummins.

I'm running a tranny cooler as I was told a few years back when we got the truck that the tranny in these trucks need to be looked after. My issue is wondering if upgrading to a 5.9 is a good move. Is their reputation as good as the 5.2, which has always acted bulletproof in my experience. Just looking for a bit more towing power. Thanks for the comment, though. Just looking for feedback as I know nothing about the 5.9.

Personally, I have never driven a 5.2. My 01 5.9 did ok loaded down. I also had 33's with 4.10 gears, so that helps in the grunt department.

Make sure you get 3.92 gears. Or, find an Offroad edition with 4.10's. They also have stiffer springs.

You might crunch the numbers owning a Cummins. I'm paying less money than I did in fuel with my 01 Cummins than I did with my 01 360. Fuel filters every 7500 miles or so are $14. Oil change is about $50 and you can run longer oil change intervals.

Towing mileage will be vastly better. I got about 12-13 highway unloaded with my old truck. Now, I get 13 city with a bunch of idling in these cold temperatures and driving short trips.

No problem. Keep in mind, the prices I've said above are if you do the maintenance yourself.

Ultimately, it's your call. I'd try driving both first to see what you like.

Here in mb you're still looking at about 6,000 difference and most of the diesels are very high mileage.
5.9 magnums are more powerful where it counts over the 5.2 but be mindful of gear ratio's. lots of 3.21 and 3.55, 5.9 trucks
A 3.92 or 4.10 geared 5.2 would pull every bit as well

I would say the 5.9 is just as reliable as the 5.2. On my '97 w/5.9, I had a water pump gasket go at 380,000km, while they fixed that I had them replace the timing chain and gears. That's the only thing that was touched on the motor by the time I sold it with 450,000km. It saw 90% highway miles, and only ever pulled a small trailer though.

Never owning a 5.2 Ram, I can't compare, but have had great luck pulling with both of my 5.9L Rams. I tow pretty much the same set up as the OP, except I have lots of mountain grades just to leave town. My 1500 does just fine, while my 2500 seams to be lacking in the power department.. I am thinking gear ratios are playing into the equation.

I'm a chrysler tech and to be honest there isnt a huge difference between 5.2 and 5.9 gas motors, the biggest thing is gear ratio, I own a 5.2 w 3.55 and it is no power house but it gets the job done, if you had a 5.2 w/ 3.92 you would be pulling easy, let alone if you had a standard trans instead of a weak 46re but at the end of the day gear ratios play a huge part.
