Engine swap

Is it possible/ worth the effort to drop a 1970 chevy 305 in to a 87 RAM?

Why on earth would you want such an antiquated, poorly performing engine under the hood?

cerres 03-18-2009 06:26 PM

I have to finish this...
Yes it's possible.
No, it's not worth it!
The day of GM's small block has long since past... on top of it all 1970 engines were, for the most part smoggers. Furthermore, the basic design is over 50 years old!
All things considered the 4.7 is a far and away better engine... great technology, clean sheet Engineering and runs head to head with Chevy's new 5.3 in hp and torque.

well when i was 16 i got this engine for free. and i built it from the ground up with Moroso and Edelbrock parts. and the 318 i have in my Ram is Junk.

318's were the answer to the smog issues... the original 273 was a runner.
A better alternative, if you want to have some fun, is head for the junk yard and find a 340. Externally, the same engine as 318 but with a lot more punch! If I were to have fun putting something together and having something unique, the 340 would be the way to go... they, in all reality, gave up damned little to the 383!

Only problem i have with that is time and money. i dont have $500 to give to a junkyard for a 340. and odds are that engine wont run. if im going to put something like that in i think id go for a 400. then again im only getting 4 MPG because of my Carb. dose anyone know a thing about a Holley 2280 Carb?

The 400 was a smogger... might be very rare to find...
I was a Carter freak... Holleys and I never made friends.

yeah im about to take a hammer to my Holley. cant figure out whats wrong with it. internet is no help at all when it comes to these old Holley's

cerres 03-18-2009 07:32 PM

I'm out of the era... 60's, 70's and they weren't worth a damn then! Carter's Thermoquad was king! The double pump hollies were great for sucking gas and a pain when they became problematic... I stayed away from them as if they had the plague.
75 to 78 or so, 440's came from the factory with Thermoquads... now that you might find in the junk yard

I can see why you would want to do this since you have good memories of building the 350 and put a lot of work into it. Besides my dodge engines, the 350 is my favorite because parts are available anywhere and there are all kinds of performance mods. Have you checked advance adaptors?
