4X4 problems

well this is my first dodge so I am not real familiar with the set up for the 4X4 I have always had fords with lockouts so far I am not impressed with the vacuum actuated front axle. I will start in the beginning every since I bought the truck the 4X4 indicator light hasn't worked and the front axle has been slow to engage, now it doesn't go in at all, I have been told it is probably the vacuum actuator on the axle first off does this sound like a good place to start? secondly is anyone aware of any type of aftermarket conversion to something different like maybe a electric solenoid instead of vacuum. Or am I over reacting and all will be okay once I get it working again? I just don't want to fix it to have a problem later when I really need it

Thanks in advance

I personally have not heard that there is a problem with the vacuum actuator, so I would assume that you should be ok after you get yours working again.

I haven't heard of any problems. The Ford ones I hear about being a poor design though, manual hubs are a lifesaver on them. Might want to make sure nothing is binding on the axle, no buildup of any kind, and that everything is well lubricated.

thanks for the input guys, just trying to get some opinions, a guy at work had to replace his and said a friend of his also had to.I am a big fan of manual locks never had any problems with them, had them on fords a chevy and my jeep but I guess I don't have that option with this truck.
