Different 5.7Ls?

Ok so I was doing a search for shocks and on a whim I went to the AutoZone site. Obviously you have to enter in the year 4x4 2x4 etc......but when it came to engines it ask about 2 hemis.

8 Cylinders 2 5.7L SFI Hemi (found in 94% of 2008 Dodge RAM 1500 1/2 ton 4WD)
o 8 Cylinders D 5.7L SFI Hemi (found in 6% of 2008 Dodge RAM 1500 1/2 ton 4WD)

So my question.......what is the difference, castings? MDS?

Most came with MDS, the mega cab does not have MDS

hmmm....no idea what the difference would be, Luke. First I've heard of it. Later 2008 production would include any upgrades planned for the 2009 model year so it looks like they ran out of 2008 model year production engines and started using the latest version.

But as far as the differences, I have no idea.

From what I found it looks like the 2 denotes MDS, and the D denotes straight displacement.

Curiouser, and curiouser....

It's weird though I was really thinking it had to be something about the beta test of the new engine. I say that because I've yet to find a truck that felt comparable, even in stock forms.

There are 3 versions of the 5.7 Hemi. The first was a straight up, no frills engine. The second, introduced in 2006, included the MDS. The third, introduced in 2009, has MDS and VCT (variable cam timing).

Damn Remerson! You are an expert! Glad to have guys like you aboard! I wouldn't know anything about stuff like that. All I can say is it's great to have a Hemi!

Thanks. I should note that not all 2009 Hemi Rams have the VCT. The ones with engine build code EZD have the MDS and the ones with engine code EZH have the MDS and VCT. All the 2010 models have the EZH which is referred to as the Eagle engine. The VCT system in the Eagle is the same system found in the new 8.4L Viper engine

...but i think the mds years version came in 2 versions (2006-2008)...with mds lifters (most trucks) and non mds (megacab and 2500's)

RamTech 12-15-2009 12:32 PM

You're right. It was late when I first replied and I was half awake for the second reply (sorry about that. gonna hafta stop sleep blogging). From 2006-2008 the 1500 HD (mega cab), 2500, and 3500 Hemi's did not have MDS. From 2009 and up the Hemi has MDS and VCT in the HD trucks. The 4500/5500 cab chassis designs are only available with the 6.7L Cummins.
