How Long Before MPGs Improve

I know that it takes a few miles in order for the truck to be broken in and you start seeing an improvement in fuel mileage. But how long, how many miles, I am at 3,000 now and I am averaging 13.5 with mainly hwy driving. Should I expect to see an improvement of any sort?

The biggest improvement will come from your driving style and what kind of roads you're on. Do a search on the forum for "MDS" and you'll get a lot of posts on this kind of stuff.

If your doing alot of highway driving you should have more than 13.5 mpg unless you are doing more than 70-75mph while on the highway.

 I have always heard...i say that loosely that it takes approx. 5000 miles to break in a motor/drivetrain. This is in reference from some mechanics i knew at a old place of work. Even a rebuilt engine so they say. Iam suprised that your only getting that ...especially with the M.D.S?

i only have 4300 miles on my truck , since day 1 ive been averaging about 21-22mpg on highway and about 16-17 city...have the 4.7, if i gets better that would be even sweeter

In my opinion, it is you. I have a 2010 and i have about 400 miles on it and in the city, with a calculator. I am getting 15.7 miles to the gallon.

With highway, im getting in the 20's.

How're you driving it? You get the best mileage when you stay off the go pedal when starting off and keeping it below 70MPH. Your '09 should be getting better mileage than my '07 HEMI and i'm averaging 18 in town and 21 hwy

I have almost 5000 miles on mine. I was originally getting 18-20 highway and 14-16 in town. Now I'm getting a combined (but mostly in town) ~ 10-12 mpg. I'm hoping it is due to the winter, both the cold and they fuel mix.

YES the cold and the fuel mixture will give poor MPG's.... Also most people with some miles on there trucks started off with no E10 GAS. E10 is 10% Ethanol and it robs about 3 to 4 MPG from my truck. I was getting 19.2 on the highway at 70 mph and now I see around 14.5 to 15 mpg ..... I have learned the sweet spot for my truck and that is at 67 MPH. The truck will stay in MDS longer and I can eek out a little better MPG's......
