Braking issue

I have a 97 ram when pressing the brake One second it will be hard as a rock and not wont to stop. Then I can release it and step on it again and it will go to the floor and about put you through the windshield. I have been told the this could be a Master Cylinder or a booster going bad. How can I check this and figure out which one it is?? Thanks for any help.

in my opinion it sounds like a booster is going bad. The way to check is pull the big hose coming from the master to the booster nad see if there is fluid in the bottom of the booster. In that case if there is that would be the booster going bad causing it to suck the fluid in when its not supposed to.

Say what? It could be a booster problem but what hose are you talking about? There's no hose from the booster to the master cylinder. How do you propose to look inside the booster to check for fluid in the bottom? Any brake fluid between the master cylinder and booster indicated a leak in the master cylinder.

Isnt the big hose a vacume hose, which is the one you would use for seafoam, pull it off and let it suck in the seafoam?? Never worked on a brake booster but how could you check for fluid in it?
