mine doesnt sound bad its just deep and loud on my 02, we bought a 40 series flow master and have 2.5 duals coming out of it that go about 1ft-1.5ft and dump to the ground. its pretty loud and sounds good, but ppl hear my loud truck before i get to them lol. dads 05 4dr hemi ram as 40 series on his with 2.5 pipes to the bumper and his sounds great too.

as long as you dont live in one of the emissions checkin counties i would say cut the cat off and run straight 3in into a magnaflow it makes it a lot deeper the factory pipe makes the exhaust cackle imo. or you could just cut the factory muffeler off and weld one on and dump the exhaust under the bed

What's a cheaper easy to do on your own mod that makes your exhaust louder, but not get you pulled over loud? I don't really know much about exhaust systems.

what would happen if i cut the muffler off and ran a straight pipe in place of the muffler

A nice sounding exhaust with no restriction. (Any one who says it sounds like crap either hasn't done it, or when they did they took off their cats)

The resonator at the back would still be muffling your exhaust tone.
