It could the switch or it is a blend door problem.

Mine did that. It was a broken mixer box. It's made out of plastic. You have to REMOVE the dash to get to it. Drop the steering wheel, unbolt the dash and have little bity fingers. I had some one do it. Also, there is a vacuum thing that works with it. Check that first. It's NOT a cheap fix. I'd step on the gas, and the air would go to the defroster, then when I let off the gas, it would come back out the dash vents. Then it quit. I had the vacuum thing fixed, then the mixer box thing took a dump. Yes, you need the BIG wallet. Sorry for the bad news. However, it has been working fine for six months now. Just throw money at it.

Let us know what it turns out to be. My truck is doing a similar rerouting of A/C. Haven't had it looked at or anything yet.

I had the same problem, and mine was a simple and FREE fix! On the passenger side of the fire wall there is a very small diameter vacumn line. Mine was broken and I could not find anything small enough to insert in the tube to fix it. I slid a piece of heat shrink tubing over it, and pushed it together, then heated it with my lighter. The switch has worked fine ALL WINTER!

There is no recall for it but there is a TSB for that repair. The 98-01 are notorious for this problem. Started after Dodge changed the dash in 98.

I am having probs with my 97. Is there a vac diagram that shows where I should look to see if I have a vac prob?
