3.55 vs 3.92 axle ratio

what the main differences in the two axle types.... im a newb to the ram truck ind...

RamTech 04-13-2010 05:55 PM

The axles are the same. The ring and pinion are the only thing different.

hemifoot 04-13-2010 05:58 PM

whats the benefits between the two (ring and pinion sizes)??

Toms Blue Ram 1500 04-13-2010 06:06 PM

3.55 would be better for gas mileage while the 3.92 would give you better performance .

hemifoot 04-13-2010 06:10 PM

thats what i was wondering.... so the 3.92 would be better for pulling/torque and power would it change the trans shift points?

Toms Blue Ram 1500 04-13-2010 06:15 PM

It would make the motor rev to the red line a little quicker . But if you have 3.55's now , your not gonna see that much of a difference . Theres only 37 points difference . Alot of guys on here have opted to go with 4.10 gears

hemifoot 04-13-2010 06:22 PM

so 4.10s would be the best to add a lil more power to the wheels??

Toms Blue Ram 1500 04-13-2010 06:30 PM

Yes there are several guys on here who have had 4.10's installed and they love em . Theres even been guys that have installed 4.56's in their V-6 powered trucks . The only draw back to gearing down a vehicle is that your gonna tach higher rpm at cruisin speed . Just for example :

right now your truck may be taching 2100 rpm at 55mph .
after a 4.10 install , it may be taching 2800 rpm at 55 mph .

You will see a difference in gas mileage .
