Trailer Brake Installation
I'm working on installing a "tow package" on my 2008 Dodge Ram 1500. The only thing my truck came with is a 4 pole trailer plug. I am installing a 7 pole plug with brake controller and hitch. I have found the factory brake control plug in behind the dash, but cannot find where I connect the 7 pole plug to the brake control wire. Does anyone know where one might find this wire? Do I also need to run a wire directly to my battery? Or is there an existing wire that I can splice into? Thanks!
Sorry, I don't have an answer for you, but I'll bump it up to the top :icon_bump:
If you have have trailer brake controller wiring under the dash then the wiring harness already supports the 7 pin connector.
The other end is tied up (usually plastic cable tie thingy) to the wiring harness at the back of the truck, usually near the middle behind the spare tire. It has a protective cap on it which sometimes makes it difficult to find. Your dealers service department can likely help here, with a little help from the parts dept, you should be able to purchase the factory 7pin, with the correct wiring harness connection already on it.
It is possible (Confirmation required) that the 4 pole is plugged into harness connector that also supports 7 pin, so don't rule that possibility out.
Here's hoping that no one has butched the factory wiring.....
Keep us posted as to how you made out.
That's how mine was on my '05 when I installed.
