How do you tell...
So when you are looking at the receiver on your truck, how do you know if it is a Class III, IV or V?
Usually the bottom of the receiver tube, or the frame, is stamped with the class.
Kinda thought that would be the case. Just went outside to double check again and carefully look all over again, but find nothing other than probably a part number, 37/C7. Now there is a plate (part of the whole receiver assembly) under the receiver tube that might be covering up anything stamped on the bottom of the actual receiver tube.
This is supposedly stock on a 2008 Ram 1500 Hemi Sport with the two package, but the class seems to be hidden on this receiver.
Most 1/2 trucks come with a class III if equipped with a receiver hitch.
Measure your receiver tube. If it's 2", it's at least a Class III.
Class I & II have a 1.25" tube.
Class III & IV hitches have a 2" tube.
Class V's have a 2.5" tube.
I doubt you have a Class IV as that is overkill on a 1/2 ton and you normally find those on 3/4T and 1T trucks.
That's good information. Yes it's 2 inch. Just thought I'd see a more obvious designation. Thanks for all your help.
my Ram came with a class 4 hitch receiver
if you have a Uhaul store near you, they can tell you what yours is
Interesting. I'll see if the local Uhaul can confirm which mine is. In my reading I haven't come across what makes a 3 a 3 and a 4 a 4. Be interesting to know what you 'd have to do to a 3 to make it a 4 (not that I'm thinking of doing it, but it would be interesting to know).
Loaded Trailer weight
From the Dodge towing web site and the '08 Ram brochure, here are the maximum loaded trailer weights listed from Dodge for your 2008 Ram 1500 truck. You did not post whether its a reg cab, quad cab or a short box, long box or 4 x 2 or 4 x 4so i'll post 'em all:
The 5.7L comes with auto and 3.92 rear 14,000 LB gross combined vehicle weight rating
reg cab SB, 4 x 2 9,100 LB
reg cab LB 4 x 2 8,650 LB
reg cab SB 4 x 4 8,900 LB
reg cab LB 4 x 4 8,650 LB
quad cab SB 4 x 2 8,750 LB
quad cab LB 4 x 2 8,500 LB
quad cab SB 4 x 4 8,500 LB
quad cab LB 4 x 4 8,300 LB
Pay load gross vehicle weight ratings are
reg cab SB, 4 x 2 GVWR 6,200 LB, hitch 1,460 LB
reg cab LB 4 x 2 GVWR 6,600 LB, hitch 1,610 LB
reg cab SB 4 x 4 GVWR 6,350 LB, hitch 1,480 LB
reg cab LB 4 x 4 GVWR 6,600 LB, hitch 1,400 LB
quad cab SB 4 x 2 GVWR 6,700 LB, hitch 1,620 LB
quad cab LB 4 x 2 GVWR 6,700 LB, hitch 1,390 LB
quad cab SB 4 x 4 GVWR 6,700 LB, hitch 1,380 LB
quad cab LB 4 x 4 GVWR 6,800 LB, hitch 1,250 LB
I'm not a pro, but I believe that anything over 6,000 GVWR is class IV but I will defer to experiance.
Yeah, I was gonna say, I have a class IV receiver on mine as well. I thought a class III was a "bumper pull"? But the '08 with tow package should come with a class IV.
