360 smog questions
Ive heard that removing smog equipment on the 80s 360 yields big hp gains and im skeptical.... not sure how to do it successfully i know that it can hurt more than help if i do it wrong can someone enlighten me a little on the whole thing????????

Welcome to the forum.

There are a few systems to deal with (smog pump, EGR valve, catalytic converters, etc...) and most systems don't like it when you remove them as it will throw codes.

You might be better off doing intake, exhaust and a custom program to the truck computer.

Or, take that 360 Magnum engine and turn it into a 408 stroker!

its not a magnum i shoulda said so first whoops..... its a carbureted 360 with no computer so my current list of mods includes headers, new straight pipe duals exhaust, a new four barrel carb, and possibly a high rise intake...... i just saw somewhere that a dude had taken off the smog equipment and gained like 150 horse and im a bit skeptical i doubt it was that much but theres gotta be something to gain from it right???

I'd be skeptical of that claim myself. That's an awful lot of HP freed up by removing a smog pump.

Just what are you planning on taking off?

everything smog related i dont know much what controls emissions on these older trucks the catylytic converter for sure and then theres a bunch of stuff on the motor that i only see on 80s model 360s so im guessing thats most of it..... im not sure how to take it off without screwing stuff up or if i should just leave it all alone.... sorry guess thats not that helpful is it

The smog pump is for pumping additional air into the exhaust to help with emissions. The only thing you will save is the parasidic lose the pump creates, maybe 3-5 hp. To make power in the LA motor you will need to do some head work and a cam. Its all about inhailing and exhailing. I would caution you don't over carberate. LA motors don't need more than 650 cfm in most cases.

ok thanks everyone thats really helpful im thinkin ill probably go with an edelbrock 600 cfm four barrel and thatll do it for me hopefully i might be able to find it in a kit with a new intake manifold too...

hello, i have a similar engine (different vehicle) its the LA 360 with a 4 barrel carb, and i too am wondering what smog components the engine has on it, so far i know it has a catalytic converter and that's about it, thanks for all the information in advance, hope you guys can help

You will not gain 150hp by removing smog. That's just nuts. The stock 4V intake is quite good, running very close to the Edelbrock Performer RPM AirGap until rpm's go above 5,000rpm, and unless you go with a hotter cam, the stock intake is all you'll need. The stock 4V intake can trace lineage all the way back to the 1968 340 Magnum 4V intake co-developed by Chrysler and Edelbrock. The stocker is about 15hp shy or the AirGap at 6,000rpm when tested with a considerably hotter (streetable) cam. That shows just how good they could be even 40+ years ago. If you wanna lose a few pounds, yeah, go aftermarket, but the stocker is free and awfully good. Actually, with modern cam profiles a 6K rpm 360 can easily use the 800-900 cfm carbs out there. An aftermarket (Speed Demon)750 is fine for max effort with essentially stock heads, towing or mileage calls for a 650. Have the heads cleaned up with some mild port and polishing, install 2.02" intake for max power to 6k rpm's, keep the 1.88" for lower performance choices. The typical 360 LA stripped of smog will show around 250hp at the crank. You can add 100hp without even trying, mostly with just the cam and some carb tuning/open exhaust. This article is on a 5.9 Magnum build, but the LA build is very similar.
