Gibson Header Installation?
 
When I purchased my truck in October last year, the driver's side exhaust manifold was leaking. Since then, it's gotten a bit worse, of course, and now the passenger just recently started leaking. When I purchased the truck (private party), the previous owner included a brand new set of Gibson headers since he figured it was going to need them. The truck already had a Magnaflow "dual" exhaust installed. I have a decent amount of experience doing some DIY work on my own vehicles, but only to the extent of brake pads, rotors, suspension work, etc. but when it comes to exhaust hardened bolts and crappy manifold studs worry me. I'd like to do these on my own, but things like this make me nervous. Am I thinking into it too much? About how much would the typical muffler shop charge to do a "simple" un-installation of manifolds and installation of headers? These should be direct replacements of the stock manifolds, right? How long should a project like this take in a driveway with a decent selection of tools? I'm hoping that the Magnaflow exhaust that's on there won't need modified at all.

4 - 6 hours for the do it yourself kind of guy, a bit less for a shop.

Good gaskets (such as the MOPAR gaskets or Earl's Pressure Master seals from Summit) make a huge difference in avoiding leaks.

Also, a good set of fasteners are a must. Many folks run into sealing problems with stock fasteners as they try to back out of the hole.

Try a set of Stage 8 fasteners when you install the headers. Once they are in, torqued one more time after installation and the clips installed, they will not back out!

You'll find that the driver's side will be a bit easier than the passenger side, especially from the top. Some shops will put the headers in from the underside depending on how much clearance they have to work the part in from the topside.

The only thing that concerns me is that there are already manifold bolts broken off in the head which would explain the leak. The 4.7 is somewhat prone to this problem.

You wouldn't happen to have a part number for the Earl's Pressure Master seals from Summit? I searched their site and couldn't quite find the ones for my truck.

I found the Stage8 fasteners online, though. $55 :SHOCKED:

Also, how would you suggest going about removing and installing? Strictly through the top, then? Any write-ups anywhere on installing the headers that anyone knows of? The Gibson installation manual seemed pretty thorough, but pictures along with the diagrams would be more helpful. :)

Thanks for your input, though! I just might give this a go with my Dad since he's got 20+ years more experience turning wrenches than I do.

They might has assimilated Earl's stuff since I last looked at Summit. Just get a good set of copper core gaskets and call it good.

Spray all stock bolts with some penetrating oil and let them set for at least 15 minutes before you try to back them out.

Don't skimp on the header bolts. It will be money well spent vs. having to retorque the bolts all the time and getting more leaks at the manifold or header...ask me how I know. :D
