No Tach, no speedo and no charge

OK, so I have a 1997 2500 with the diesel and auto tranny. Just the other day the truck was running fine until I jumped into it at night to run to the store. Low and behold, there was no speedo, no tach and the alternator was not charging. Also, the tranny seemed like it was stuck in 2nd and will not shift up or down in drive. In addition, I cannot preheat my plugs, and the cruise control does not work. I replaced the battery and also the alternator with no luck curing anything. I am thinking that since all this happened in one shot...I think my trucks engine control unit is shot....what do you think?

Thanks for all the help.

Definatly sounds like a computer problem. Too many things wrong at one time. Have you had a shop run a diagnostic, they might get a code and tell you rightway. Good luck hope you get back on the road.

Geet it scanned for codes and diagnose it right instead of throwing parts at it. It will likely cost you less in the long run.

I did

I took it to the one local Dodge dealer and they said that the crank position sensor was out, the speed sensor on the tranny was out and, get this, the circuit board for the dash was bad....but I am thinking no way...all of those items going bad at exactly the same time. It sounds to me like they want me to throw parts at it until they figure it out...and I can't afford to do that.

I would check the crank sensor and the sensor wiring. It is located on the front of the engine and picks up a tach signal from the crankshaft pulley. It is held on w/ 2 nuts. The wiring connector is located just below the front of the valve cover meets the head. You can use a business card to set the gap on the new sensor. Has the drive belt broken recently? I have seen broken belts take out the sensor wiring. JoeDodge
