Your opinion on towing...

Hi everybody, a newbie with a questions that might have been beaten to death...

I own a 2010 RAM 1500 TRX 4x4 with Hemi engine (5.7 l) with the towing package option. The truck towing capacity is 9950 pounds per Chrysler. I am planning to buy a Work and Play travel trailer which weighs 7500 pounds. Motorycles, passengers and miscelleneous stuff are estimated to 1500 pounds for a total of 9000. This gives me a 1000 pounds leaway only.

Am I trying to tow too much? I know my truck can handle it but am I pulling the elastic too much? I still want to have fun while towing my trailer and not feel that it's the trailer that is in control...

Thanks for your advice

Make sure you get a load equalizing hitch and a trailer with brakes and a brake controller in your truck.

You're pushing the limits, but you should be fine. Just remember you can't stop like its not there so leave plenty of room in front of you at all times.

Yeah thanks for the advice, there will be a load equalizing hitch and electric brakes on the trailer. Plus I have the cool brake controller in the dash of the truck... love the computer system of the ram that confirms that the trailer is hooked up.

950 under your GVWR is about 10% so you should be good.

The right hitch is mandatory. You need to know the loaded tongue weight of that trailer. Then make sure your receiver hitch is the right class.

Here's a good link to determine hitch classes and capacities:

All great advice. The tongue is about 900-1000 pounds and I have a class IV receiver.

I feel pretty confident that the RAM will tow it, I was more worried about the behavior of the truck. I used to have a Honda Ridgeline (oooupss -- now I know better) and towed almost up to its capacity (5000 pounds). The truck behaved horribly and the engine over-revved terribly.

I really love my RAM and would not want to spoil the pleasure of driving because of it being overloaded.

Any idea what your rear gear is?.

Your truck should do fine. I firmly believe the GVWR rating is conservative.

It is the 3.92 so that should help right (stronger than the 3.55)!?!!

Definitely a better gear. Taller than the 3.55, provides more low end torque and will help move the load.
