That is a pretty cool idea man. I would imagine getting rid of the column shifter would consist of getting a new steering column to really get rid of it. Otherwise I am sure it can be cut off or something haha. Not 100% man, maybe it comes off easily.

I would have to agree with Scat, probably going to need a new column. The only way I had my shifter off the column was when we converted the '81 to an auto and just left the shifter on the floor.

I'm thinking of doing this also. There are a few guys in another forum I'm on and they look pretty sweet.

Ill check and see what they did.

we converted an auto ranger to stick once and it was hilarious watching people get in and try to drive away after throwing the column in drive lol. you could either buy the new column.. or take the shifter out and put something cool in there

should be easy to find the plastic surrounds on the column for a manual just put those on after you take the lever off

^^^Thats what I'm going to do when I go to a manual.

I believe the shifter will just unbolt...then, get the plastic surround out of a 5 speed, and maybe even the shifter location block off plate (for the gauge cluster) from a 5 speed, and just swap them in.
(I highly doubt you could hook the shifter location indicator up to a different, probably best to remove it and put the block off in there.)

The plastic is the clam like part around the column behind the wheel.

Or you might beable to go with a aftermarket column from someone like Flaming River .
