May Have Gotten Ripped Off
I would like your opinion on something. In my 10+ years of buying and selling online, I think I have been ripped off.

I sent a US Postal money order to a guy in Georgia for a gauge bezel for my 1980 Dodge D150 on Friday Sept. 3rd. He sent me an e-mail on Tuesday the 7th stating that he received my MO and would send it the next day. I asked him Sunday the 12th in an e-mail to give me a tracking number. He still hasn't responded. I have sent him another e-mail and two private messages on this other forum asking him politely for shipping information. I know he has been on that forum multiple times since I sent the PM's. I'm getting the feeling that he is avoiding me. Am I being unreasonable by thinking he should give me some sort of reply?

What would you do? Would you call him out on that forum? Will the post office do anything about it? Can I file a claim with the post office? I thought maybe I would wait until next week to do anything.

I would tell him a response is warranted or you will be forced to take other actions.

What are that forum's buying and selling policies? See if there is anything in them that has a remedy for this kind of situation.

That really sucks man and yeah, sounds like a rip off to me. Unfortunately, I don't think whatever that forum's policy is regarding this is going to make much a difference as a sale between individuals is ultimately between them, terms of sale/payment etc. Same chance one takes buying anything from an online seller, IMO, and, I really doubt the Post Office can do anything. They're only held liable if something sent via them is insured by the sender. Honestly, I would send the person a stern message, along the lines of Paris' thought, but good luck and I really hope you do end up getting what you paid for. Keep us posted man.

I'm about fed up with this other forum. I doubt they could help or would even want to help. People are rude for no reason most of the time and they have a 4x4's only type of mentality. I've found another forum that has a bunch of guys that are interested in hot rodding 1972-1993 Dodge trucks that I like way better.

The funny thing is, I searched the guy's posts and he asked opinions about this moral dilemma he was having. He was working at a shop that required he perform shoddy work and didn't want to be associated with it. He also made a post in another guy's thread about how he hated thieves and they should have their hands cut off. Of course, those posts and his previously prompt emails led me to believe he would be honest. I did notice he can be abrasive. So, maybe he is ticked off at me for asking for shipping information.

I did tell him that his lack of communication is making me fearful I will not receive the bezel. I have been nothing but polite to him in doing so.

Does anybody know if the US Post Office will do anything about it if I carry in my MO receipt and file a claim?

Sounds like it's time for a road trip and deal with him in person .:box2:

Here is my latest message to him. Does it seem harsh or out of line?

Are you still there? Your lack of communication with me is leading me to believe I have been ripped off. Surely, you can see why one would think such. I know you have been online here more than once since I've been trying to contact you, so you've had ample time to reply to me. I'm really trying to be nice about this. All I want is a little information on when/how you shipped my gauge bezel. I searched your posts and believed you were honest when I read about your moral dilemma working in that shady shop. I felt like you could be trusted, so I sent the money. Please prove me correct in that. I am willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. I can understand if circumstances have prohibited you from sending the package. Just communicate with me and I'll be happy. I would like to see proof of you sending my package by Friday. If not, you know what I will be forced to do.

The post office will only become involved if they believe he is committing mail fraud. Personally, I'd give him a couple of more days to respond and then I'd call him out.

That sounds like a case of theft in my opinion. The only thing bad about money orders is you cannot get the money back I think. If you used Paypal you could fight it no problem and get it all back.

I would let him know if you dont hear from him then you will contact authorities or something to that extent. Also calling him out on the forums would be good since you will let other members know to avoid him and not to buy anything off of him. You should let him know you are going to do that as well. If he sells a lot of stuff on there then he will not want his rep destroyed.

I sent a PM to the moderators on that forum, but I asked them not to do anything until Friday. In the mean time, he sent me an e-mail with his cell phone #. I googled it to see if it was legit. I called. VOICEMAIL!! :i_rolleyes: I sent another e-mail.

I called the post office earlier. The lady told me they could run the MO for $5 to see if it has been cashed. SO, for $5, I get to know if he stole the check or stole it and forgot to cash it. After a few weeks, I can claim it is lost and they will issue another one. I asked her about mail fraud and she wasn't sure about that.
