Why a 180 deg stat?

What are the advantages of a 180 deg stat? I know it starts to open sooner there fore the engine is being cooled sooner but to what advantage, also here in Nova Scotia Canada winter can be very cold will this hamper the heater capabilities at all?

It's more advantageous if you start upgrading for performance. With the engine running cooler, it helps the ECM really take advantage of the modifying timing from some tuners.

At least that's what I've read...

my heater is still works fine, plenty hot for us down in texas. a 180 t stat does help u gain any Hp, but it helps u never lose the HP u have due to heat soak.an engine will leterally lose HP when it reaches operating temp.having a lower t-stat will prevent this. hope this helps

A cooler running engine is a more efficient running engine and it will make a bit more HP. Many folks in warmer climes change them out to keep engine temps down all year round. In colder climes, they may swap them out with a higher temp unit for winter to sustain a higher engine temp.

What stat is in it from the factory?

203 degree if memory serves correctly.

My EVICdisplay temp reads right at 203-204 +- a couple degrees.

My display read 195 & I pulled the OE stat out & it was the 203.
Now my 180 stat reads about 176.

Yup, a 203.

For those of you with electric fans, here's some info that may be helpful.

I swapped out the tstat in my SRT when I first got it. I have two electric fans on the radiator, a low speed and a high speed unit. After dropping in the lower temp stat, I did get a bit of a drop in normal running temp from 199 - 201 down to 185 - 187.

Then I added the Predator so I could drop the control temp for the electric fans to come on, phasing in the low speed fan at 191, high speed fan at 198. Now my temps hang right at 181 - 183 in cooler weather at speed, 189 - 191 in stop and go in the same cooler weather with the low speed fan coming on as needed. In higher ambient temps at speed I'm still around 183 - 185 at speed but the temp quickly shoots up in stop and go, so my high speed fan comes on a bit more often as I get to 198 - 199. I like the way it works so it's something to think about if you have electric fans, a HEMI and a Predator.

I'm surprised that my Ram runs about 179 even with 90 degree temps out with the 180 stat.
