Start up tick

Lately I have noticed several times during cold start up my truck will have what seems like a lifter tick for a second or two. It has only done it a couple times but seems like it is more likely to do it after sitting all night when it is relatively cold out. I want to take it back to the dealership, but with the problem only being intermittent I know what they are going to say. So first I want to find out a little more about the problem.

My question to you guys is has anyone had this happen on their truck or has anyone heard about this happening on the 2010s?

My second question is what kind of damage could that be causing? I have worked around engines my entire life and it sounds like a collapsed lifter which leads me to believe there could be a lack of lubrication for the few seconds until it pumps back up...thoughts? I switched to Mobil 1 5w20 oil and a K&N filter after the first 1500 miles and change it every 3000 to 3500. I know probably over kill but I was hoping to avoid problems like this.

I really love this truck but this makes me a little worried, I have a Dakota with this problem but it has 155000 miles on it not 9000. :(

Any help would be appreciated...

I just noticed the same thing on my truck last night for the first time. After spending 5 hours washing and cleaning my truck I started it up and heard the ticking but it only lasted a few seconds and went away. I only have 2800 miles on mine.

Hey Guys,
I am on my 5th Hemi, and they have all exhibited the same tick. My first was in 04 in a Ram, in which I fought with the dealer about it for a long time. Afterwards only to find out that believe it or not, and like it or not, it is just fine. After running that truck to a hard 185k problem free miles, I believed them. That is just a characteristic of the engine and not a symptom of another problem. It happened in my 06 Magnum, my 08 Charger, my sons 05 Ram and now my 10 Ram as well. It does go against everything you would think. It was the same with the 80s GM cars that burned oil on startup, its just the way it was designed.(They allowed the oil to seep past the valve guides on purpose). I did find out though that certain additives decreased that noise. I used Z-Max (no I dont work for them, or represent them) and although it didnt completely eliminate the tick, it did lessen it. I guess you could try whatever brand you like. This is just my experiences.

Thanks for the responses guys it does make me feel better knowing I am not the only one that has noticed the tick.

Now I will say I have heard of the notorious "HEMI TICK" but thought that was a tick that was always present while the engine was running warm, cold didn't matter. Mine is only for a second or two at first start. Is what I am hearing the same problem?

Mine has also done it a few times. First time it actually did it was when I was at the dealership picking it up from getting a recal done. They said it's normal and don't worry about it. Mines only done it a couple times

Mine also has been doing this recently....

It's called the Hemi tick, perfectly normal. There are a bunch of threads about it here, just search...

It's a known issue. I've heard it in both my HEMI's at cold start up and then it goes away. MOPAR techs have said it's normal. I even saw a write up on the 300 side of the Z with a technical explanation and an assurance it was normal.

As long as it goes away I'm not gonna worry about it.
