Front Ball Joints - When to Replace?

While working on my now-resolved brake issues this past weekend, I noticed that my front wheels' upper and lower ball joint rubber casings looked pretty cracked and weathered. No excessive play in the steering wheel, no tracking problems, no alignment issues, no noise coming from the front end when I drive over speed bumps. Not quite 59,000 miles on my truck.

So is this just a cosmetic issue, or do I need to think about replacing them? How do you know when the ball joints are worn out and new ones are needed?

As always, thanks to the experts for any and all information here....

As long as the boots aren't busted or their not worn out you should be ok .
