Looking to buy '03 3500
I'm considering buying a used '03 3500 with 5.9L Cummins/5 speed (manual).
The truck looks to be in remarkable condition and only has 96,000 miles on it. As this would be the first diesel and dually that I've ever owned, I was hoping that you could provide me with some insight or things to look for when I go take a look at it.
The main purpose for buying it is to tow my travel trailer, as my '08 1500 is a little on the small side to be tugging my trailer around and at 7 MPH while towing, it really kills the wallet on a long road trip.
Thanks a bunch,
1. Take it to an independent mechanic for an inspection. If the seller won't allow this, run away.
2. Check the value at http://www.kbb.com
Yeah!! I've been told that a few times.
Just wanted some quick things to look at if/when I go check it out.
Ok, you're already starting with the right motor  and the mileage for an '03 common rail is crazy low! If you don't buy it I will!
Things to look for on the dually:
check the INSIDE tire as it's regularly neglected and has been known to air down which causes crazy wear on the tire. Cracks can form on the outside rim due to overloading as well as warping of the hubs.
Aside from that, I don't have much else besides recommending getting a full safety check done.
Well, just got back from checking her out. What an OUTSTANDING truck!!! Besides a door lock switch that doesn't work, there is nothing wrong with this thing!
No leaks on all the common areas, tires are practically brand new, brakes just got serviced and no steering wobble at about 70 mph. Clutch grabs and holds like it should.......
Compared to my '08 1500 this thing drives like a Cadillac. I can not think of a reason not to buy the truck, besides that fact that I already have one and that's not a good enough reason for me.
