wate pump life expectancy

Hey guys,
got a 2001 2500 5.9 I6 diesel rig. got home last night got out of the truck and could hear fluid leaking out of her, took a look this morning and looks like the water pump is leaking near the gasket on the front near the pulley. Was wondering how intense putting a new one on is, id say i have a medium skill level when it comes to doing my own repairs. was wondering what the difficulty level might be.

Welcome to the Z. Haven't worked on the diesel, but have done a lot of water pumps on gassers, they are usually pretty straight forward. Hardest part is getting the fan off if its a clutch fan. Just have to wedge something in to hold the pump shaft still while you unbolt the fan. Same with putting it back on the new pump.

We have a lot of forums for all kinds of topics, so you shouldn't have any problems finding a place to post questions.

We LOVE pics of Rams.

Here's how to post them: http://www.ramforumz.com/forumdisplay.php?f=73

The fan on the CTD doesn't mount to the water pump so removing it isn't necessary. The pump is just above the tensioner and isn't too difficult to change.

ok, i noticed fluid leaking from it, but im not sure its coolant afterall, normally coolant leaves and oily stain where it leaks, this liquid seems oily, but not like coolant, is there a possibility it is something else? im unable to determine exactly where it is leaking from but it appears to be coming from near the water pump, however i am new to diesels and just got this truck. is there a possibility it is something else? or is it likely the water pump?
