what steps do you have to take exactly in order to not tear anything up. I'm afraid to do mine, i've never cleaned an engine before. It just seems like puting water under there would tear something up or make it run funny or something. it can't be as simple as just spraying water and scrubbing with some soap. Do you have to cover any thing up or something? Might sound dumb, but i honestly don't know.

I wash the engine bay just like I wash the outside. Soap and spray with water. Never had an issue unless there was one already there. Ie: Faulty plug wires. Which is a good thing to find out :) I also dry the engine and spray it down with no touch tire dressing to make the hoses / plastics shine nice. You could eat off my engine and thats the way I like it.
