Consuming oil

I don't think it's normal, but I figured I would ask anyway. Anyone else withthe gen. 4 Ram with the 4.7 notice that it consumes oil?

I noticed the last two times I changed the oil that there was less oil draining than needed to fill the system. Some is obviously lost via the old filter, but it seemed odd. So ... I've been paying more attention. After about 2500 miles I needed to add about a pint (just below the low line) and at about 3500 miles I look to be down about another quart. No leak detectable (clean pavement in my parking space). I'm going to ask at the dealer tomorrow durring my recall inspection, but I figured I would ask you all as well.

Maybe i should go check my oil lol, when i change my oil (every 3 k) its always a little low,but never below the line.

I'm using mobile 1 so I've been changing the oil between 5k and 6k, but only 3.5k since the last change.

Asked about it while I was in for recall. Service manager said that, "it's normal for internal combustion engines to use a little oil", but that we are all spoiled by how efficient modern engines are at conserving oil.

However, he said that the apparent 1.5 quarts I've lost seems like a bit much. He told me to top it off for now, but bring it to them for the next oil change so they can get a date and milage in the system. Then I should be vigelant durring the next interval, but if the oil level decreases not to fill it up, but rather bring it back in so that they can document the loss. I've got about 2000 miles until I'm due for another change, and at the rate I've been driving since I switched jobs (I ride the bus to work now) that wont be till february 2012!

He made a comment about getting it documented while it's still under warrenty, but the '09 had a lifetime powertrain warrenty, and I assume oil consumption would apply.

thats sucks!!!! mine is a 08 but has the same motor, ive never even checked my oil, take it to the dealer every 3,000 miles, maybe i need to check it!!!!!!!!

Yeah, give it a look. I've hard this engine is prone to sludging, perhaps it actually prone to oil loss that results in sludging.

P.S. Go Gators

My 02 4.7 eats oil too. About every 2500-3000 miles I loose around a quart. No leaks...i just keep adding and topping off when low.

my charger did the same thing havent checked my truck yet and yes i gotta say it go gators im a huge gator fan

I'm going ot have it official checked soon. Almost time for an oil change so I'll let the dealer do it so they will beleive me when I bring it back low. Since the last change I've had to add 3 quarts.

I also periodically get this reaction. Only after driving distance on the freeway, the first light I stop at (or toll booth) the truck won't accelerate. It sputters like it's running on empty. I pull my foot from the gas and step down again and it's completely normal. Then if I park the truck and let it cool down (at least several hours) the next time I start it there will be a puff of black (not blue) smoke out the tail pipe about 30 seconds after ignition. I've been in for that twice before but they can't replicate the issue. No codes. I'm sure this is somehow related to the oil consumption but noone can figure it out.

Keep us posted on what they say when you take it in, seems a bit on the excessive side as for oil consumption to me.
