Minimal Heat

Hello all

I have minimal heat in my 1500 5.2L. It's warm enough to tolerate the winter here in Illinois. I wanted to ask though; I sometimes hear some gurgling or water type sound when I turn on the defrost. This doesn't always happen. Not even at regular intervals and its always been far enough apart and for short enough time I haven't bothered looking into it or forget. I don't have a problem with fogging windows or anything so I don't think the heater core is blown. I suppose could be partially clogged.

Any suggestions to look at or ideas as to the cause would be great.

How's the coolant level and what's the operating temp of the engine? Are both heater hoses getting hot or just warm?

Coolant level is good, engine temp gets to the 170 180 range and the hoses feel normal. I did put cardboard in front of the radiator which pushed it up to around 200 engine temp and I get a little more warm air, but not much. Also, it takes 20 minutes of 60 MPH to get it up to that 200 temp. I don't have a thermometer to put on the vent, but it isn't near as warm as it should be, maybe 1/3 as hot as it should be.

Sounds like a stuck open thermostat at this point.

I agree, a stuck thermostat. There cheap just replace it. The gurgle noise is normal for some vehicles, but could indicate low coolant level, perhaps needs to be bled of air.

With a 98 Ram, I'd have to go with the t-stat too. When was the last time it was replaced and the whole cooling system flushed?

Unsure when it was last flushed as I have only owned for a few months. The coolant looks brand new though, bright green. I'll check the thermostat if I get time. Thanks for the suggestion.
