1998 4x4 Speedometer not working

I just bought a 1998 4x4 318 5 speed ram. I drove it home today and the speedometer and odometer do not work. Does anyone have some tips for me as to where to start looking?

I dont know if this matters or not, but the brake light in the dash is on, and it seems as though the wiring for the rear brake lights might have been screwed up at one point, as they doont work properly

The speed sensor in the rear end is bad. Or the wiring going to that sensor. when it goes the speedo quits abs and break lights will come on.

What if the abs light is not on?

jd322 12-14-2010 12:52 PM

That would be odd. Are we sure the truck has rear wheel abs? When you turn the on dose the abs light turn on and then off? Have you checked for any codes?

The ABS light does not turn on when I turn the key on. The brake light does stay on though. So that would mean that an abs fuse has been pulled. but from what I could find in the distribution box in the engine bay and in the dash. Both fuses are there and good. Is it possible to pull the bulb out of the gauge cluster? Or i'm not finding the right fuse?

If the fuses were bad the light would stay on all the time. Sounds like the bulb could possibly be bad. I would just get the rw ss replace it. The only other thing that comes to mind is the tcm under the front left wheel well some times has a problem with The pins rotting. This is pretty rear tho.

Are there any specific directions when it comes to removing the rw speed sensor?

Unplug it remove the hold down bolt. Work it side to side as to try and pull it out. If it breaks off you'll have to take the diff cover off and work on getting out from there. Oil the new o ring when you put the new one in.

Thank you. Probably going to do it this weekend. And if it works Ill post a picture of my truck. if not ill still be lying under it
