2010 RAM 1500 4x4 will not shift out of park

Start motor...all is fine

Press on brake pedal (normally hear a slight click when working fine) but no click this time.

Attempt to move shift lever on column from P to D and it will not move. Will not move out of P.

Truck sitting in garage

Truck has 3,600 miles, bought new

Truck had symptons of not shifting out of park after starting but always worked after 2-3 tries of pressing on brake and hearing the click sound.

Any ideas before I get Dodge to drag this out of the garage to take to the shop?

Thanks,
Andrew

No need to have a tow truck drag it out. There is a tiny access door on the top cover of the console (to the right of the shifter). Open it up and there should be an over-ride mechanism in there to release the shifter.

Drive it to the dealer - save time, and money and the potential of damage.

Could just need an adjustment at the pedal or something there needs replacing.

I think you need to use your ignition key in that space in the console to release the shifter. I could be wrong but the dealer mentioned something about it to me.

Correct, doesn't have to be your ignition key usually something small that fits in the slot

Just fyi about towing it, my brothers 2010 Charger had to be towed due to a battery cable not being tightened down and that simple mistake cost the dealer a new rack and pinion kit for the charger, due to the fact the way the car was taken off the tow truck. So watch your tow truck drivers like a hawk, especially how they hook up, drag, or jerk your vehicle on and off the trucks.

If you figure it out let me know. My wife's truck is doing the same thing and the dealer cant ever duplicate the problem.

Thanks for the tip on the release point. I'll try that next time it locks on me.

After a few hours, I simply moved the tilt steering into a different position and the truck shifted out of park. When I pressed the brake pedal, almost immediately I could hear the "click" like a switch sound and then I knew it would work.

I cancelled the Roadside Assistance tow and carried on. The problem occurred once again after a few successful tries but I moved the tilt and it didn't work right away, but it did within a minute. But it was stressful for that moment.

Problem is still there, going to the dealer next week.
I have the maxcare warranty so I BETTER be getting a rental on their dime.

ADDED: What I would like to know is when you press the brake pedal, what exactly is that "click" sound you hear? What does it do? Where does it source from?

That's the solenoid that releases the shift interlock. Good luck on the rental.

UPDATE: Dropped the truck off at the dealership and had the service writer check to confirm the problem. First 5 tries it worked great, but I told him to be patient and try some more.

Problem appeared and he said, "Yep, that is a problem". Wrote the ticket up and since I have Max Care, they called Enterprise and got me in a comparable vehicle. So now I drive for free (actually, nothings really free), the 2009 Dodge Caliber. I drove that home quickly and parked it in the garage. And took out the Dodge Magnum and am driving that around, SOOOO much better with the Hemi. Will let everyone know what they say.

Oh yea, they said since I have the 3/36 free scheduled maint. agreement, they will do the first one as well. I just turned the odo over to 4k driving into the service bay.

.

Pages 301 to 303 of the owner's manual has instructions on how to do the overrride
with the column shift and the center console shift.

Are you sure its the owners manual and not the service manual?
