Engine surging while holding at a constant speed need help!
 
I have a 19999 Dodge Ram 3500 Dually 5.9l Diesel. The engine is stock no mods, all factory original intake and exhaust with an exhaust brake.

First my cruise control stopped working and now while trying to hold a constant speed I get intermittant surging, the engine will drop in rpm's and and then surge back above where it was before and then return to the speed I was holding it at. Originally only did this at lower speeds, now is becoming more frequent at higher speeds.

Any ideas? I am new to Diesel's so I am lost... EGR Valve? Throttle position sensor bad? Fuel filter clogged?

Any help would be appreciated.

I would look at the fuel system first, it's the most likely cause of the surging. If it's getting progressively worse, then the fuel filter is most likely gumming up and it's not flowing as much fuel any more. You can change out the fuel filter and see how that goes. If you want to make a real difference, you could also install a FASS or Snow fuel separator system to improve the fuel going into the chambers.

Either one of two things the APPS switch or the VP-44. Sorry no good news. Still check the fuel filter first. Of the two I would guess the APPS. I have a good source for them the Dodge house gets $400 for them...

I had the same exact symptoms. Cycle the ignition on and off three times and look at your odometer display. You should get either of the following codes. P1693, P0121, 0122, or P0123. If you get any of the following codes, it is a defective APPS. Local parts store has them for $300, I know of a site that has em' for $160. If you need one, let me know.

I did the code check and got P PCU, P1602, P1693. So the 1602 means a APPS switch. I would appreciate your source info.

Any by the way, there isn't a 1602 DTC stored in the 24 valve Cummins. There is however, a 1693, and what that means is when you get a 1693 it's usually a companion code stored in the PCM. So, you will have 1693 along with another code, but 1602 is not a 24V code. APPS codes as state before are 0121, 0122, and 0123. If you get either one, time for new APPS.

I rechecked, and I must have read the code without my glasses or something. the codes are:
P1682 and P1693. Do you know what the P1682 indicates?

The code references are causing me to scratch my head a bit. I haven't been able to find code lists on the forum, or much about retrieving them, where they are stored, or companion codes stored in the PCM, etc. Is there a reference around that explains all that stuff?

Regarding the companion code, does it mean I need to get a code reader to find what is in the PCM?

Thanks for your patience. I suspect that the APPS is the issue from reading other threads about these symptoms, but it would be nice to know what the codes show before I order a new one. I'll check out "Timbo APPS". Thanks for the response.
